The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
